Two Maine women inflicted with Lyme Disease are working to build awareness of deer ticks and the Lyme Disease threat they pose to children, adults and pets each summer.  Mo Babicki and Jane Honeck, who both have suffered from Lyme Disease, are trying to spread the word about this debilitating disease and also provide assistance through Tick Tactic®, a tick identification and removal kit they invented. They’ve recently caught the media’s attention and are in line with announcements from health officials.

• For example, on May 5, 2008, Dora Anne Mills, MD, MPH, Director of the Maine Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced that “Lyme Disease…is on the rise in Maine, and three-quarters of infections are contracted in May through August, so now is the time to take precautions.”

• In 2007, the national CDC reported high Lyme Disease rates in 10 states, with reported cases doubling since 1991. The CDC report noted that most illnesses occurred in June, July and August, when the infected ticks that carry the disease are most active.

Dr. Mills said in her May 5 announcement, “Effective prevention measures include reducing the chances of getting bitten and checking skin for ticks, since the infection will not be transmitted if ticks are removed within 24 to 36 hours.”

Tick Tactic® is designed as an easy solution for quickly identifying and removing ticks anywhere, at any time. Cleverly packaged in a three-inch metal "mints-style" tin, Tick Tactic® includes a "How To" booklet, deer tick identification guidelines, tweezers, alcohol disinfectant, magnifier, bag for tick disposal or sending to a testing facility, pencil, a symptom record and resources for learning about Lyme Disease.

Tick awareness and the Tick Tactic® removal kit may become even more important if the Infectious Diseases Society of America changes its tune regarding Lyme Disease. On May 1, 2008, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal announced that his antitrust investigation has uncovered serious flaws in the Infectious Diseases Society of America's (IDSA) process for writing its 2006 Lyme Disease guidelines because “The IDSA's guideline panel improperly ignored or minimized consideration of alternative medical opinions and evidence regarding chronic Lyme Disease, potentially raising serious questions about whether the recommendations reflected all relevant science.”

Tick Tactic® is manufactured in Richmond, Maine and is offered at the suggested retail price of $5.99. It is small enough to keep on hand anywhere, including the home medicine cabinet, kids’ backpacks, glove compartments, purses, golf bags, camping equipment, and just about anywhere else. Tick Tactic® can be found in convenience stores throughout New England and New York, and it’s also available online for immediate shipping.
