With an increasingly complex legal system, there is an overwhelming need for immigrants who come to the United States to understand the laws that govern the country and where to seek legal counsel. Geared toward the immigrant community, Welcome to the Law is a much-needed tool to assist newcomers transition to life in America and become positive members of the community. The 80-minute DVD answers some of the most important legal topics that immigrants to the U.S. should know about and understand, including their rights under the law; how the criminal justice system works; how crimes are punished; when you need to hire an attorney; the courtroom structure; what to do if you are sued or arrested; and the types of legal resources that are available. To reach a broad cross-section of immigrants, Welcome to the Law is subtitled in Spanish. In the next release Tagalog and Armenian subtitles will be available. Additional languages will also be added to other future version of the film. “There are millions of new immigrants in America, but there are few places where they can find a complete overview of the U.S. legal system,” says Adam Williams, founder of Cultures on Film. “Because our legal system is a vital part of our society, Welcome to the Law provides a much needed resource to help ease their transition to life in America. The film also helps promotes strong communities by advocating understanding and giving people the right tools to become honorable citizens.” For U.S. citizens, Welcome to the Law also provides useful information and insights about the legal system that they may not be aware of. Welcome to the Law is the debut film from the COF’s “Our Society” film project. Our Society is a series of educational DVDs devoted to educating and informing people living in the United States about the topics that touch our everyday lives while promoting better living by embracing and encouraging cultural diversity, harmony and respect.
