My parents were friends with a couple who moved back to the Finnish-speaking part of Russia back in the 30s to help build Communism, became disillusioned, managed to escape, and ended up owning a little resort in Florida. I think it's great that Frahmann casts some light on that movement. It's a good book suitable for teens and young adults. Someone gave this book a bad review because of inauthentic vernacular of the period. I'm not sure what he was talking about.

I didn't notice anything that sounded inauthentic. I thought the details and dialog were well done. I also liked the plot. Maybe this was intentional. As a narrative, the story had some compelling aspects, but it was very poorly written and needed the pen of a determined editor to make it a polished novel. The series of events oftentimes seemed disjointed. The characters, even though they were surrounded by interesting events, were flat. They had different names, but we learned next to nothing about them, or their feelings and reactions to the terrible events.

Maybe this was intentional, in keeping with Finnish American culture as I have experienced it, but as a reader I could not identify with or feel any empathy with even one of the characters.

Having grown up among Finns who shared many of the habits and character traits of the characters in The Finnish Girl, I found this book to be interesting, and found myself thinking about the direction of the story when I was away from the book.

I recall, in particular, the stories i used to hear the older adults tell, and now, I wonder if they were all projecting their own thoughts and feelings rather than truly knowing the truth about the lives of those around them. Many of our family's old friends were shown as "Russians" on census forms, and I know many were scrutinized as possible Communists.

Loved being carried back into considering the many possibilities Being half Finnish, I was delighted to see a book about a Finnish girl. My parents had a dog named Sisu that's the only Finnish word I know , so I was tickled to learn that Lempi means love. Many of the statements about Finlanders were true for me, and that was both surprising and comforting. The style of writing was interesting, jumping from year to year and character to character, tying the whole story together in the process.

Trust me, you don't need to be Finnish to enjoy this book. I think I'll read it again. One person found this helpful. This is the story of a young girl and her family 's struggle to survive after the depression in the McCarthy era. This family has several strikes against it in that they are immigrants from Finland and have some communist ties.

I read this with interest thinking of my carefree years at the same time these people were mistreated for little reason by our government. The story tells also of the brother's struggle with believing the communist doctrine and leaving for Russia to have a better life and also his harsh treatment.

The story is slow sometimes but I learned from this and I will recommend. I got this book to better understand what my mother's parents' experience when they came to the U. This is a well thought out, developing type of story, where you know how it ended, but not why it ended the way it did until the final chapters. I also like the fact that the story is developed through the viewpoints of more than one person and more than one generation.

As such, it gives the reader a complete understanding of how historical and cultural factors molded each person and why they made the choices they made. It is the story of an immigrant family and their journey in the United States. It's the story of why they came to America and what happened to them once they were here.

It's a story of the impact of the geopolitics of this country and the impact those politics have on this simple family. It's a story of family secrets and the prices paid for those secrets. I loved each of the characters, how they were developed and how Frahmann exposes their stories to us. I will never forget her. Her story and her family's story will be with me forever. I hope I remember it's lessons. Lots of deeply flawed characters made this book very interesting.

Told in several different perspectives. I enjoyed the author's descriptive ability, and although I can't say I found the "Finnish Girl" herself particularly likeable, I was still very drawn into finding out what motivated her and how the story would end. Over all I would say this was a pretty sad book, but I still a very interesting read that I would recommend. The story held my interest and the author did a good job weaving a fictional story in with factual information about the US government's attitude toward suspected "communist activities" in the '60s.

I have Finnish heritage and thought the author captured life in an average Finnish American household. For the most part the story line moved along and the changing of narrative by the different characters was done smoothly. Lempi's life story was mostly unremarkable, but the interactions with every other person in her life are quite remarkable. It should cause each of us to pause and reflect on what impact our everyday words and deeds will have on those we love as well as the greater society over time.

Likewise, set amongst real historical settings, I couldn't help but draw analogies between the terrors of McCarthyism with the current rise of Trumpism.

I loved this book. I would have given it a 5 star rating had I liked the ending. It was disapointing and sad. I will add back a star for a total of 5 stars if there is a sequel. It just felt unfinished. Maybe that is the point, I'm not sure. I read it in 2 days, so it is a fast read. It is worth reading.
